Business Beyond ProfitfromCanopy

What teaching this looks like

Business Beyond Profit is a free eight-chapter unit for Kentucky classrooms that asks what a business is actually for. This is the same orientation the teachers running it read. Take five minutes, then decide.

Thank you for bringing the BBP Unit into your classroom.

Business Beyond Profit (BBP) asks a question many business classes skip: what is the purpose of a business? Over eight topical chapters your students will work through the ways a company can and should treat its people, its customers, its neighbors, and the spaces where it operates. The BBP culminates in students building and pitching a business of their own.

Canopy builds and supports this curriculum, free of charge, for Kentucky classrooms. You are not on your own with it. Everything you need is in this portal, it stays current, and you can reach us from any page using Ask Canopy at the top of the screen.

How The BBP Portal Works

Next time you come back, there is no password to remember. Enter your email, we send you a link, you click it and you are in. Links are single use and expire, so if one stops working just ask for another.

There are three tabs across the top of your screen:

  • Start Here — This page. The guide to how everything works. Come back any time.
  • Chapters — The eight topical chapters you teach, in the order you teach them, with the unit lesson plan first. Each one opens with what to prepare and what to print, and carries the Daily Classroom Guide, the Student Workbook, the Chapter Lesson Plans and the optional deep dives. Chapters One to Seven also carry their own slide deck, and the chapter videos live inside those decks: Chapters One to Five have one each, and it plays when you reach its slide. Chapter Eight is presentation day, so it carries the rubric and the surveys instead of a deck.
  • Library — Everything we have, in one list. Library content can be filtered by what it is and which chapter it belongs to. Use this when you know what you want but not where it lives.

How to use the materials

You will find everything you need to teach in the Chapters tab of the portal. When you're preparing for or ready to teach a chapter simply go to that Chapter. There you'll find the slides and supporting materials you need to teach. You'll probably start to notice how many times we say that all you really need is a) a printed copy of the Daily Classroom Guide, b) a printed copy of the Student Workbook, and c) the energy to click through the slides and engage your students.

That said, all of the BBP Unit's materials are in the Library Tab. Don't get overwhelmed when you take a look. All of the materials you need to teach each chapter are contained in the Chapter sections of the portal (we told you we'd say it a lot). You don't have to come here or go to the library to find them.

Truth is we probably gave you more than you need--but we felt too much was better than too little. Just remember that you can teach each chapter with a copy of the Daily Classroom Guide, the Student Workbook, and the Chapter Slides (again!). Just go to each chapter in the portal--it has the materials you need! Here's an explanation of the core materials:

  • Preparation -
    • The Teachers Manual is a lot. It contains the BBP Unit Lesson Plan, all of the BBP Chapter Lesson Plans, the Daily Teaching Guide (for all Chapters), the BBP Slide content broken up by chapter, the BBP Student Workbook materials broken up by chapter, the BBP Glossary broken up by chapter, and the Deep Dive Material for each chapter all in one handy manual. You get a t-shirt if you read the entire 160 page document. We debated even telling you it exists.
    • The BBP Unit Lesson Plan is a nice way to get the big picture of what's happening across all chapters and what the unit as a whole is aiming to do. It also provides some essential prep work you need to consider before teaching the unit.
    • The BBP Chapter Lesson Plan contains the background information and overall teaching guidance for each chapter. Worth reading prior to teaching each chapter.
    • The Daily Classroom Guide is the core document you need in hand when you're in the classroom. You'll get a printed copy and it's linked in each portal Chapter.
    • You'll find a lot of other materials in the library that are included in each chapter as you move through the portal. You don't have to go fetch them!
  • Teaching - During class you will display the Chapter Slides directly from the portal.
  • Teaching - Use the Daily Classroom Guide as your in-class playbook, along with a copy of the Student Workbook.
  • Learning - Students will follow along in the Student Workbook to record and process their learning.

Teach from the portal when you can

Please use the live portal whenever possible. This helps Canopy support implementation, improve the curriculum, and understand how Business Beyond Profit is being used. Downloads are available as a backup if classroom internet access is unavailable.

Practically: the portal always has the current version, and a file you saved in September does not. If your building's wifi is unreliable, download the chapter the night before and teach from that. That is exactly what it is there for.

What is required

Business Beyond Profit is designed to give teachers flexibility while preserving a consistent student experience. A few things stay fixed so that every student in every school gets the same core.

  • Teach the chapters in order. The unit builds on itself, and students land somewhere different if the order moves.
  • Core slides are taught in class, by you. They are not a reading assignment.
  • Students complete a final presentation.
  • The student pre-survey, the student post-survey, and the teacher survey all get done.

The three surveys

Student pre- and post-surveys, along with the teacher survey, are required. These surveys help Canopy understand program impact and keep Business Beyond Profit available to schools. You hand the student surveys out; students never sign in to this portal.

  • Student pre-survey — During Chapter One
  • Student post-survey — On presentation day, before the first presenter
  • Teacher survey — Once you have finished the unit

All three are in the Library, as live forms to hand out and as printable copies. Filter the Library by Surveys to find them.

Where you have room

You know your students. Add to this, and keep the core intact.

  • Add your own examples, stories, activities, or slides before or after the core material.
  • Deep dives are optional. Use them when your schedule and your students want more.
  • Bring in what is already working in your classroom.
  • Tell us what you added. The good ideas end up in the next version of the curriculum.

If you download a slide deck, you may add slides before or after the core deck. Please keep the core BBP slides intact and in order.

How long a chapter takes

Estimated teaching time is 50 to 100 minutes per chapter. Actual timing varies with your class period length, how much discussion you get, whether you use the optional deep dives, and anything you add.

A chapter is not the same thing as a class period. Some will run across two or three, and that is normal. Each chapter page shows its own estimate at the top.
